When were the first books written?

The book has had many physical appearances throughout the ages. But it was only around the 5th century that books appeared in the form that we now know.

The book has had many appearances. Already around 3000 BC. wrote the Sumerians with cuneiform script on clay tablets; the Egyptians at the same time wrote hieroglyphs on pressed papyrus strips. Only around the 5th century AD. the book appeared in the physical form that we still know today - so as a number of merged pages, held together by a cover.

The oldest known book was published in 600 BC. made by Etruscans from northern Italy. This book is made of 24 carat gold, and the six illustrated golden pages are connected with golden rings. The oldest known printed book is from China and was published on May 11, 868. It is a so-called block book that is stamped page by page with carved wooden blocks and ink.

The technique was already used in Korea in the 8th century, but there is no year of publication in books from that time. Books were made by hand until the 15th century, so the printed 42-line Bible that the German Johann Gutenberg published in 1454 was a breakthrough.
